Who were McLean, Ernest O (1900-1968)

James A.  &  Almira E (Reynolds) McLean

Elizabeth M & Ernest O MacLean

Ernest Oliver McLean was born on the nineteenth of May, 1900 in Dorchester, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. He died in June of 1968 in Marshfield, Massachusetts.  Now lets fill in the details of his life in between.

The United States census taken on the eighth of April, 1910 for Boston City, Massachusetts shows Ernest as ten years of age living with his parents and siblings.  His father, William Theodore McLean was born in 1872 in Williamstown, Oswego, New York, and at this time was a streetcar driver (motorman) in Boston, Massachusetts.  William was the son of James A (1831-1915)  & Almira E (Reynolds) McLean. His father had one brother, Irving Norwood McLean who lived from 1871–1946. Ernest's mother, Fanny Ingertha Amundsen, was born in 1878-79 in Horten, Norway and immigrated to the United States in 1895.  William and Fanny met thereafter and were married on the twenty-first of November, 1899 in the Boston suburb of Newton, Massachusetts.  They had three living children at this time - Ernest was the oldest, then came Edith Lillian, who was born on the twenty-eighth of January 1905, and Ester M, born June/July of 1909 all in Dorchester, Massachusetts.

Ernest registered for the World War I draft on the twelfth of September, 1918 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. At that time he listed his permanent residence at 722A Dudley Street in Dorchester, Massachusetts with his mother, Gertie McLean. He was a tall gentleman with blue eyes and dark brown hair.  It is apparent from his draft document why he registered in New Hampshire, as he lists his employment as holder on Cutts Oil Corp in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He also lists that he had a place at 422 Pleasant Street in Portsmouth, New Hampshire where he stayed.

The next US census taken on the fourteen of January, 1920 Ernest is now nineteen years old and working as a helper in the Navy yard.  His family is living at 722A Dudley Street and his father is now a chauffeur.  Ernest has a new little sister now, Ruth, who was born in December of 1919.

In 1923 the Boston City Directory shows Ernest as living at 55 Richfield Street in Dorchester and working at a boiler maker.  In 1924 he is still listed at this address, but as an electrician.   Then in 1930, he is shown residing at 722A Dudley Street as a chauffeur.  In the years ahead from 1933-1938, we see Ernest now earning a living in Boston as a photographer.  In 1939, he is working in the photography department of the Herald-Traveller.

It is now the nineteen of April 1940, another census year, and Ernest is now thirty-nine years of age.  He is married to a English-Canadian girl, Eva K --, who is a year older than him.  They are living at 61A East Squantum Street in Quincy, Massachusetts as a couple with no children.  Ernest is now working for the newspaper as a news camera person.

On the twenty-fourth of June, 1953 we see Ernest O. McLean also known now as MacLean, Ernest O,  appearing in the Third District Court of Plymouth before the plaintiff, Paul Young over an inheritance of property he acquired jointly with an Ann R. McLean on Spring Street in Marshfield, Massachusetts on the twelfth of April, 1945   Ernest inherited the property on Spring Street on the fourth of August, 1954 as the surviving joint owner for payment of $6,400 real estate inheritance tax. It is this writer's thoughts that Ernest possibly met Eva at the newspaper or through his photography, but who was Ann? At this time he is married to Elizabeth S. (--) MacLean.  The deed shows that Ann was a former wife of Ernest O MacLean. His marriages are a mystery.  Three wives and no marriage records to say when or where?

The next time we see him, he has passed away in Marshfield, Massachusetts in June 1968 and his wife, Elizabeth M (b.1913) is buried beside him.

On the eleventh of June, 1990 the property on Spring Street identified as house number 211 was granted to Tobey MacLean of 5 Tracey's Path, Marshfield, Massachusetts in trust by the widow of Ernest O, Elizabeth S. MacLean.  Perhaps someone can comment and validate the three marriages, and how he came to change his surname from Mc to Mac.

Cholakis John Elias & Elizabeth Fraser; Fraser John - Who Are they?

On the stretch of road inside the Marshfield Hills Cemetery that runs adjacent to Old Main Street Extension is one stone on which John Elias Cholakis, Elizabeth Fraser Cholakis and a third Sanford Fraser are listed. Who are these people and what was the role in the history of Marshfield?  Seeing a flag in front, one can only surmise that at least one of them was a veteran.   In checking the US Public Record index, I found Sanford Fraser.  He was born on eighth of December 1932. In 1987 he resided at 11 Jones Street in New York, New York.  I did find a John H Fraser living at 624 Webster Street in Marshfield in 1933.

Social security death records indicate that John Elias Cholakis was born on the thirteenth of August, 1925.  He died in Queens, New York on the twenty-seventh of November 1998.  He was the son of Elias J and Despina (Metropole) Cholakis. Both his parents were born in Greece.  In 1930, his father is living in a duplex with two of his children, Ellen and John, at 188 Seaside Avenue in Queens, New York.  The other part of the duplex was occupied by his in-laws, the Metropoles. Perhaps his wife Despina died in childbirth.  Still no clue how they came to be buried in Marshfield, Massachusetts.  What was the connection?

Still no clue as to how they came to be buried in Marshfield. What was their connection?

Edward Mann Peters (8 May 1881 – 3 March 1948)

Walking along the road that runs adjacent to Old Main Street, I happen to come to a stone inlaid in the ground with only a name “Edward Mann Peters” and two dates beneath 1881 – 1948. Who is this man and what did he do?  Let’s just check out the census records for Marshfield and see. The 1940 census shows him alive and well living on Ferry Hill Road with his wife, Betty A, who appears to be ten years his junior.  This indicates she was born around 1891.  Wait!  There is another lady at the bottom of the household list identified as his mother-in-law, Sarah C. Shattuck. Sarah was born in New York about 1856. She moved in with them sometime since 1935 from Hillsboro, New Hampshire.  So, now we can safely determine his wife’s maiden name was Betty A. Shattuck. This census indicates he was also a bit of a workaholic as he worked about forty-five hours a week which is understandable if you own your own practice.  He also has one son, his namesake, Edward Mann Peters, Jr living with him.  Junior Peters is about thirty-two years of age now.  We know from his stone Senior Peters lived eight more years.
Let us see if we can find out more about this Senior Peters parents, and if he had any siblings. Ah! We find him at age nineteen, in the 1900 census records, his father was apparently deceased or in the service.  His mother was listed as head of their household at that time and this census was taken shows them as residents in the Town of Medford, Massachusetts.  She is listed as Mary Peters, born in 1851.  Both his parents were of Scottish descent.   Edward was the oldest of four sons living with their mother at 148 Cottage Street in Medford, Massachusetts.  He and his siblings were Edward M. Peters, Jr -  b. May 1881, Robert W. Peters – b. June 1883, Lewis H. Peters – b. February 1885 and Alexander C. Peters – b. June 1889.   Their mother was a hat trimmer.  At this time, Edward is listed as an insurance clerk and his brother Robert was a clerk in stationery.  The other two boys were in school.

What happened to his father?  Well, further research pulls up an actual marriage record showing Edward M Peters of Medford, Massachusetts showing Betty as his second wife. It also gives her full name as Bernice Adeline “Betty” Shattuck of Nashua, New Hampshire. They were married on the twenty-second of June 1929 in Nashua, New Hampshire.  She was the daughter of John L and Sarah C. (Hartney) Shattuck. Betty worked as a secretary and he was in insurance.  Oh, I can almost hear him making excuses telling his first wife how work is picking up and he will be late almost every night as he starts having an affair with the new girl (secretary) in the office. As things get more serious, he asks his first wife for a divorce.  This is all shown in the marriage record to his second wife. We also know now that Edward was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts and his new wife was born on the seventeenth of April 1892  in Francestown, Hillsborough, New Hampshire.  We still have no clue as to his father.

Another record found indicates Edward was a member of the Mount Hernon Lodge of Masons.  Now we have a complete birth record indicating he was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts on the eighth of May 1881.  We also see when he died was the third of March 1948, presumably Marshfield, Massachusetts but not clear to say exactly.  He was the son of a tin smith,  Robert L Peters and his wife, Mary Edwards. Both his parents were of Scottish descent.
The first draft he registered in was in 1918, at which time he was living at 1920 O NW Street in Washington, DC, he was thirty-seven and working for the Federal Government as an assistant deputy in the War Risk Bureau of the Marine and Seamen’s Division.  He was married to his first wife, Margaret A. of Allerton, Massachusetts.  He was a tall man of medium stature with blue eyes and sooty hair.  This marriage ended in divorce.

He also registered for the World War II draft in 1942.  He was sixty years of age at this time, and living at 22 Shepherd Road in West Medford, Massachusetts. This document shows he was receiving his mail in Boston at his place of business, E. M. Peters Co, Inc. at 4 Liberty Square.  However, his second wife he gives as living on Carleton Road in Marshfield.

His father, Robert Lindsay Peters, was born in twenty-fourth day of December in 1850 at Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland and died in West Medford, Mass on the twelfth of December 1892. He and his wife, our subject’s parents, are buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford, Massachusetts. His mother, Mary, also from Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland was born on the twelfth of January 1851. She died on the sixth of June, 1946 at Medford.  Perhaps 22 Shepherd Road listed on his draft registration for WWII was his parents address.
Edward’s second wife, Bernice, died in Weymouth, Massachusetts on the eighteenth of November, 1974.  She was the youngest daughter of Jon Lewis Shattuck and Sarah Clark Hartley.  It does not appear he had any children by either marriage.

Much of his life, Ralph worked for the Joslin Showcase Company of Boston and Cambridge. A business that began with his Uncle, Edmund Joslin (brother of Ralph's mother). Ralph started as a sales representative before becoming the general manager about 1938.  After his uncle's death in 1944 he became the owner.

The Joslin Showcase Co. was the principal supplier of interior store equipment to the Jordan Marsh Company of Boston and other stores all over New England. Joslin supplied most of the interior furnishings for Jordan's new store at the Framingham Shoppers World, built after the end of World War II.
Ra Elelph marriedanor Constance Dunn, daughter of John and Elizabeth Whelan Dunn on May 20, 1930. They lived in an apartment in Quincy, Mass., and then bought a home at 75 Maple Street, Milton, Mass., in 1937. In 1962, they winterized and moved into their former summer house on the South River in Marshfield, Mass.

Ralph suffered from periods of mental depression in his mid-forties. He sold the showcase business in 1956, during one of these depressions and semi-retired.

In 1964, Ralph purchased the Tides Motel at Chatham, on Cape Cod and operated it for two years. In 1968, he purchased and operated another Cape Cod motel property for a year. His wife, Eleanor, shouldered a great deal of responsibility in Ralph's later enterprises due to his recurring depressions.

Ralph had a strong interest in religion and supported all churches. He particularly enjoyed his class reunions at MIT and had a s
incere desire to help those less fortunate.

Ralph and Eleanor had two sons: Paul Joslin Ferdinand and Warren Arthur Ferdinand.

Ralph died on the twenty-third day of December 1974 at South Weymouth, Massachusetts of injuries received from being struck by an automobile on Plain Street (Rt 139) in Marshfield on the eleventh of December while trying to cross the street.

Bradley, Joseph H (1878-1952) - Marshfield Farmer 1935-1952 on Cornhill Avenue.

The 1940 Census for Marshfield shows that Joseph H. Bradley was a sixty-three years old, single male, who was born in New York, renting a farm on Cornhill Avenue on which he conducted his own farming business.   He was the second to the youngest child and second son of Michael & Jane Bradley of New York City, New York, who immigrated from Ireland to the US.  His siblings were George (b. 1867), Mary (b.1868), Kate (b.1875) and Elizabeth (b.1879).  What could have brought him out here to take up farming in Marshfield?

Who is F. Dorothy Batylda?

FDorothyBatylda.jpg

Here lies the remains of F. Dorothy Batylda resting in the Marshfield Hills Cemetery with only the years 1919-1975 on her stone. She served  in the United States Navy acheiving the rank of ensign during World War II. Lets take this information to Ancestry.com and learn more about her.  Well, according to the U.S., Department of Veterans Affairs BIRLS Death File, 1850-2010 Dorothy enlisted in the US Navy on August 3, 1944 and was released on January 3, 1946. This record also shows that Dorothy was born on May 8, 1919 and died on September 10, 1975. The social security index further identifies that she died in Cumberland, Rhode Island. This leads me to question, why was she buried here in Marshfield, Massachusetts then?

In searching further, I realized that Batylda appears to be her married name. I found an obituary notice for an Alice P (Crisp) Brundrett, who passed away at the age of ninety-five in Boscawen, New Hampshire. She was the sister of Donald Crisp and F.Dorothy (Crisp) Batylda.  Alice was born in Needham, Massachusetts on January 14, 1916.  Most likely that is where Dorothy and their brother Donald were also born.  Their parents were Harley & Florence (Carpenter) Crisp.  So the lady buried in Marshfield Hills cemetery was named after her mother apparently, and the F standing for Florence.

Let’s plug her dad into Ancestry, and we find that in 1940 Harley Elmer Crisp, born on December 17, 1882 in Needham, Massachusetts was living with his wife, Florence E at 94 Main Street in Marshfield. Harley was a salesman for a safe company. Harley registered for the draft in World War II as well as his daughter.  He was a mason in the leather industry after the service and it shows he died on November 1, 1972 in the Highlandville section of Newton, Massachusetts where he was born. The birth records for Needham verify he was the son of Oliver and Lillie S (Low) Crisp.

Now we put Dorothy in by her maiden name and learn, according to Massachusetts, Marriage Index, 1901-1955 and 1966-1970 she was married in Marshfield, Massachusetts in 1951. With the year, we put in the surname of her intended and voila! she married Thaddeus L. Batylda, of Polish descent.  He was born on October 29, 1915.  In the 1960s, Thaddeus and Dorothy were residents of Framingham, Massachusetts. Thaddeus passed away on December 3, 1998 in Tucson, Pima, Arizona  Another record shows his full name as Thaddeus Leon Narcissus Batylda was apparently using that as his assumed name according to the subject Index to Correspondence and Case Files of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, 1903-1952 which was filed on February 23, 1936. His true name being Tadeust Januszewski, which lists him the subject of bigamy.  His application for social securit lists him as Thaddeus L. Batylda, born in Warsaw, Poland to Leonard and Ann (Markowska) Batylda. Well, we can see he loved women - too many at once.

Sad to think she lies all alone here in a cold Marshfield grave, but in researching her story it is clearer why.  If it is true her husband was involved in bigamy, we can only imagine how poor F. Dorothy (Crisp) Batylda felt. She hangs her memory on her service to her country, yet looking around all other veterans have a flag in their honor = poor Dorothy has none. Fold3 shows she registered as Florence Batylda. Who is F. Dorothy Batylda, she is Florence Batylda who has gone unrecognized for her service to this country for she watches others get flags for their service, but all she has as the words on her stone - no flag flies for Florence.
