Here lies the remains of F. Dorothy Batylda resting in the Marshfield Hills Cemetery with only the years 1919-1975 on her stone. She served in the United States Navy acheiving the rank of ensign during World War II. Lets take this information to Ancestry.com and learn more about her. Well, according to the U.S., Department of Veterans Affairs BIRLS Death File, 1850-2010 Dorothy enlisted in the US Navy on August 3, 1944 and was released on January 3, 1946. This record also shows that Dorothy was born on May 8, 1919 and died on September 10, 1975. The social security index further identifies that she died in Cumberland, Rhode Island. This leads me to question, why was she buried here in Marshfield, Massachusetts then?
In searching further, I realized that Batylda appears to be her married name. I found an obituary notice for an Alice P (Crisp) Brundrett, who passed away at the age of ninety-five in Boscawen, New Hampshire. She was the sister of Donald Crisp and F.Dorothy (Crisp) Batylda. Alice was born in Needham, Massachusetts on January 14, 1916. Most likely that is where Dorothy and their brother Donald were also born. Their parents were Harley & Florence (Carpenter) Crisp. So the lady buried in Marshfield Hills cemetery was named after her mother apparently, and the F standing for Florence.
Let’s plug her dad into Ancestry, and we find that in 1940 Harley Elmer Crisp, born on December 17, 1882 in Needham, Massachusetts was living with his wife, Florence E at 94 Main Street in Marshfield. Harley was a salesman for a safe company. Harley registered for the draft in World War II as well as his daughter. He was a mason in the leather industry after the service and it shows he died on November 1, 1972 in the Highlandville section of Newton, Massachusetts where he was born. The birth records for Needham verify he was the son of Oliver and Lillie S (Low) Crisp.
Now we put Dorothy in by her maiden name and learn, according to Massachusetts, Marriage Index, 1901-1955 and 1966-1970 she was married in Marshfield, Massachusetts in 1951. With the year, we put in the surname of her intended and voila! she married Thaddeus L. Batylda, of Polish descent. He was born on October 29, 1915. In the 1960s, Thaddeus and Dorothy were residents of Framingham, Massachusetts. Thaddeus passed away on December 3, 1998 in Tucson, Pima, Arizona Another record shows his full name as Thaddeus Leon Narcissus Batylda was apparently using that as his assumed name according to the subject Index to Correspondence and Case Files of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, 1903-1952 which was filed on February 23, 1936. His true name being Tadeust Januszewski, which lists him the subject of bigamy. His application for social securit lists him as Thaddeus L. Batylda, born in Warsaw, Poland to Leonard and Ann (Markowska) Batylda. Well, we can see he loved women - too many at once.
Sad to think she lies all alone here in a cold Marshfield grave, but in researching her story it is clearer why. If it is true her husband was involved in bigamy, we can only imagine how poor F. Dorothy (Crisp) Batylda felt. She hangs her memory on her service to her country, yet looking around all other veterans have a flag in their honor = poor Dorothy has none. Fold3 shows she registered as Florence Batylda. Who is F. Dorothy Batylda, she is Florence Batylda who has gone unrecognized for her service to this country for she watches others get flags for their service, but all she has as the words on her stone - no flag flies for Florence.
Good news! I brought this to the Veterans Agent (Bill Dodge) attention and Florence now has her own flag. He said it was an oversight.
