John Ricardo Roderick (1926 - 2016)

Roderick, John R. "Johnny", Retired Chief Marshfield Police Department, passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on February 14, 2016. Husband of the late Beverly Ann (Swanson) Roderick. Loving father of Christa Roderick, Sandra Beals, and Donna Beals all of Marshfield. Son of the late Joseph and Olivia (Silva) Roderick. Dear brother of Kenneth (Carolyn) Roderick of Marshfield, Janet Roderick of Marshfield, the late Elizabeth, Rosemarie, Peggy, Frederick, Evelyn, Juliet “JuJu”, Joseph “Moose”, Robert, Delores and Donald “Wayne”. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, friends, and his beloved dog Lucky.
John was born on April 9, 1926, in Midland, Pennsylvania. He was the oldest of the 13 children of Joseph and Olivia Roderick. John was raised in Marshfield Massachusetts and graduated from Marshfield High School in 1944. In High School, he played football, baseball, and basketball, and was team captain for all three sports. John was also Vice President of his class. After graduation, John entered the United States Army and served in World War II. 
In 1958, John joined the Marshfield Police Department. He was an Intermittent Officer for two years before becoming a full-time Officer in 1960. John was promoted to the position of Sergeant in 1964 . He became the first Police Captain for Marshfield in 1973. In 1977, John became the Chief of Police, a position he would hold until his retirement in 1980. John served a total of 22 years on the Marshfield Police Department. 
In 1974, he received an Award of Heroism for attempting to save a man from a burning home.
Not long after his retirement from the police, John took a position in the Security Department of South Shore Bank in Quincy, MA. He retired in 1991. For many years during this time, John was also the head of Security for the Marshfield Fair. He held that position for over 20 years until August of 2001.
John was always a family man. He married his love, Beverly, on February 11, 1973. Daughter Christa was born later that year, joining the family along with her older sisters, Sandy, and Donna (“Chickie”). Johnny and Bev were happily married for 28 years, until Bev passed away on December 24, 2001. 
John had many hobbies that he enjoyed. One of his greatest joys was his yard and keeping it in beautiful shape. On any given day, you would have seen him outside with a rake in hand. He also golfed for many years and was an avid fan of local sports, especially Marshfield High School football. John was also an animal lover and has been “daddy” to many beloved pets over the years.
Johnny was a wonderful father, husband, brother, uncle, and friend over the years and a beloved member of the Roderick family.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, February 18, 2016, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the MacDonald Funeral Home, 1755 Ocean Street (Rte 139) Marshfield. Funeral from the funeral home Friday, February 19th at 8:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Christine’s Church 1295 Main St Marshfield at 9:00 a.m. Interment will be in Marshfield Hills Cemetery.
